While dining at a local pub with incredible food and an array of craft beer  I noticed a line of brown bottles above the bar.  I found out they were called "growlers" and you could buy one, fill it with your favorite brew and enjoy the tasty treat AT HOME!  It's truly the best way to keep craft beer in your own fridge!

While researching growlers I ran across the bottless.net website and found that there is quite a history behind them.  Bottled beer came around because it was more economical, but before that, growlers of different types were used.  Some examples were jugs, pitchers and even buckets (and not the kind that you get at the bar now filled with ice and six bottles)!   Remember, we're talking about draft and craft beer.  Beer in growlers were sold as a pint, but there was almost a quart in the growler with the excess space allowing for the all important "head' of the beer. Now days, if you're going with a standard sized growler you can expect to get 64oz.

The beauty of a growler is that it's refillable (good reason to go have a few when you get it filled for home consumption).  You just need to keep it clean and that's easy!  Hot water and soap, as long as you get all the soap out before refilling.  Not only will soap residue act as an unwanted laxative, but that leftover soap will definitely affect the taste of your beer and you don't want that!

Be sure to bring your growler in for a refill CLEAN!  I found through research that most states have a law that won't allow the pub/bar to clean them for you.

If you take care of your growler you can use it forever, after all, it's glass. But, if you should break it, chip it or decide your too exhausted to wash it right away and it gets gross, you can always just purchase another growler and start over!

Thanks to bottless.net, a company that is a wholesale supplier to the craft beverage industry, including several of our local establishments.  I've learned what I need to know to enjoy my favorite craft brews at home.  We have "his" and "her" growlers at our house because we have different tastes! (but I swear he sneaks some from my growler!)

You like brew too? You'll love sampling several American craft beers at Twin Ports On Tap! You definitely won't want to miss this one!
