Before this winter began, we'd been giving notice that it would likely be a Super El Niño winter, with warmer temps and less snow. Needless to say, that has most definitely been the case and as February approaches that pattern looks to continue with even warmer temps on the way.

It's not very often the forecast calls for temperatures into to 40's on February 1st, but that is what is being forecasted, there's even a chance for that to be the case as far north as the Duluth area.

Regardless of the time of year, this type of weather makes a lot of people more anxious to turn the page on winter and jump right into summer. This is especially true when you factor in the fact that daylight is lasting longer with each passing day.

By the end of January, Minnesotans will have enjoyed around 40 extra minutes of daylight than what was seen at the beginning of the month. Using Minneapolis as the example, it still means sunset will be at 5:19 pm on January 31. The rest of the state will be very close to that.

So, when will we notice a significant change in Minnesota's daylight hours? You may be surprised at just how fast that will happen. According to Time and Date, a 7:00 pm sunset is closer than you might think, thanks in large part to a significant calendar event.

This is nice, steady progress, but a significant calendar event is about to happen that will have a major impact. Sunday, March 10, is Daylight Saving Time so we will “spring forward” one hour, and enjoy sunsets approaching 8:00 pm as we head toward April.

  • March 31 - Sunrise: 6:54 am / Sunset: 7:40 pm

While we can certainly expect more snow to fall between now and the end of March, it is comforting to know that days will continue to get longer regardless, and when snow does fly in March, it does melt faster than it would earlier in the winter.
