This Busy West Duluth Intersection Is Getting A Mini-Roundabout
Heads up if you're traveling through West Duluth next week. There's a major reconstruction project taking place on 40th Avenue West, which will impact traffic. The 40th Avenue West Reconstruction Project begins on August 24th, 2026, and will continue through Halloween.
40th Avenue West Reconstruction Begins August 24, 2026

This year's work will focus between 8th Street and the railroad tracks on 40th Avenue West. 40th Avenue West becomes Haines Road as you drive up the hill. The reconstruction project is needed because the pavement section and curb and gutter on 40th Avenue West are nearing the end of their service life. The traffic lights at 40th Avenue West and Grand Avenue are also near the end of their service life.
Mini-Roundabout Planned For Grand Avenue & 40th Avenue West Intersection 2027
One of the key projects is to remove the traffic lights at 40th and Grand and replace them with a mini roundabout. Mini-roundabouts are single-lane circles for traffic that fit within the dimensions of a standard intersection.
A raised center median will also be installed on 40th Avenue West from Grand Avenue to 8th Street.
A 10-foot path will be constructed on the east side of the roadway, and a 6-foot sidewalk will be installed along the west side of 40th Avenue West. Lighting will be provided along the 10-foot path.
Traffic will be detoured to 57th Avenue West
From Morris Thomas Road, motorists will be routed down Stebner Road to Getchel Road, down through Highland Street into 57th Avenue West, and finally Grand Avenue.

2027 Construction Project
The major reconstruction will resume in spring of 2027. At that time, the new mini-roundabout at Grand Avenue will be installed, along with any remaining roadway reconstruction. That will take most of the summer and is expected to be completed by August, 2027.
