22 Things That Automatically Disqualify You From Becoming A Minnesota State Trooper
The Minnesota State Patrol is hiring again. In fact, they are holding hiring seminars for people interested in a new career. Surprisingly, you don't need a background in law enforcement to apply. They have a training program for applicants selected that meet their criteria.
If you're interested in attending a hiring seminar, you can RSVP by emailing patrol.recruiter@state.mn.us.
I was reading about it on their website to get information when I ran into a list of things that will automatically disqualify you. If you've got a clean record, you're good to go. I was surprised though at some of these automatic disqualifiers.
Felon
This isn't a surprise, but if you've been convicted of a felony, the State Patrol doesn't want you.
Assault In Fifth Degree
You cannot have been convicted of assault in the fifth degree in Minnesota or any other state or federal jurisdiction.
Domestic Assault
Domestic Assault in the 5th Degree is also an automatic disqualifier.
Crime Against Vulnerable Adult
You can't be convicted of a crime against a vulnerable adult. Mistreatment and other related statutes also apply.
Prostitution
You can't be convicted of prostitution and become a State Trooper.
Lying To A Police Officer
More specifically it states you can't be convicted of "presenting false claims to a public officer or body."
Medical Assistance Fraud
Fraud's never good, and it will follow you on your record.
Theft Of Any Dollar Amount
Yes, no matter how big or little amount of money, if you stole it, you're out.
Disorderly Conduct As A Caregiver
The State Patrol really wants people who don't have a history of hurting others.
Can't Be Registered As Predatory Offender
This is kind of a no-brainer, but you can't be a State Trooper if you're a registered offender.
No Drug Convictions
You can't be convicted of any state or federal narcotics or controlled substance crime. You also can't be dismissed from a crime in another state if it would have been illegal in Minnesota.
Convicted Of Possessing Burglary Or Theft Tools
I had to dig deeper into this one, but it's Minnesota Satute 609.59. Basically if you have a device or explosive that's intended for a crime it's illegal and will disqualify you from becoming a State Trooper.
Bias Motivated Crime Conviction
If you have had an enhanced penalty because of bias motivation in an offense you cannot become a State Trooper.
Obstructing Legal Process, Arrest, or Firefighting In Last 60 Months
Some of the offenses cannot have happened in the last 5 years.
Leaving The Scene Of An Accident In Last 60 Months
If you're going to be investigating accidents, you probably shouldn't have left the scene of one on your own.
No Insurance Conviction
No insurance in the last 12 months or no insurance twice in the last 60 months is an automatic disqualifier.
Driver's License Suspension In Last 60 Months
Even if your driver's license was suspended for bot having proof of insurance it applies.
Driver's License Revocation In Last 60 Months
Once again, this is a no brainer.
DUI or Reckless Driving In Last 60 Months
Misdemeanor or Gross misdemeanor driving under the influence, careless, or reckless driving in the last 5 years.
Too Many Traffic Violations
Here's how this breaks down. You can't have had 2 traffic violations in the last year or 3 in the last 3 years.
Driving After Suspension
No driving after suspension convictions in the last 5 years.
Providing False Information To The State Patrol During Application
If they find evidence that you have failed to disclose, or misinterpreted or falsified information to the department you are automatically disqualified.
You can read more about the disqualifications and hiring process on the Minnesota State Patrol's website.
