I've been golfing a lot this summer. So much so that I have actually gotten a couple of birdies and a handful of pars. It's enough to keep you going and helps you bounce back from those double, triple, and quadruple bogies. I've golfed quite a bit of the places within a two-hour drive of Duluth & Superior. One of the nicest courses I finally got to try out last weekend was just up the North Shore, under two hours away from Duluth.

Superior National at Lutsen is a course I was aware of before. But to be honest, I didn't know it was a course that was so nice it was worth making a day trip out of it. We left the Twin Ports at about 11:45 to make sure we got to our 2:10 tee time. We had no problem getting there in time.

You know you can tell when you are at a good golf club when they are strict about tee times and the number of people in your party. The most frustrating thing ever in golf is when you have multiple groups teeing off at the same time. Slow play, poorly managed groups, and allowing singles and doubles to go out on the course is a bad idea. Superior National does a good job of grouping players together if need be. I appreciate that.

This is a nice course. The fairways were beautiful. We golfed in early October and most of the leaves were already coming off the trees, but they did a good job of keeping the fairway and greens free of leaves. I was impressed. Losing my ball in the leaves wasn't nearly the issue I had expected it would be.

This course isn't cheap, and it shouldn't be. There are budget-friendly courses around and you usually get what you pay for. If you want a top-notch golfing experience at a nice course, you have to pay for it. Their peak rate for 18 holes in summer is $98. They have spring and fall specials too, along with military discounts.

The Canyon section of the course is really cool. The terrain is crazy up and down. There is a river that runs through it. One of the par 3's has the tee box so high about the pin you almost can't see it. It's challenging, but it's fun. The course has a super nice layout, and it's really something to see.

I definitely will be back next year. The only regret I had was that it was a pretty foggy day and we didn't get to see much of Lutsen Mountain. We did get some glimpses, and I can't wait to see it on a clear day.

It also helps my experience that on hole 18 I made par with an incredible third stroke from 170 yards out. I landed it for an easy par putt. That's what keeps you coming back!
