National Weather Service Shares 2023-2024 Winter Predictions For Northern Minnesota

The US National Weather Service Duluth office has shared their predictions for what kind of winter we will see in 2023-2024 in Northern Minnesota. The Northland will be affected by El Nino this year, and based on previous years they are able to forecast what we should expect in the coming months.

A strong El Nino is expected for December, January, and February. This will allow more warm air intrusions to the Northland. The National Weather Service Duluth reminds you that this isn't a day-to-day forecast, but rather a seasonal prediction in general.

Temperature Forecast for Winter 2023-2024

While there could still be some cold snaps, the National Weather Service is predicted a warmer-than-average winter season. Strong El Nino years in the recent past brought above-normal temperatures and less snowfall. The last time we had a strong El Nino in 2015-2016, the average temperature was 4.8 degrees higher than normal.

Snowfall Predictions for Winter 2023-2024

The National Weather Service is predicting a slight chance we will get below-normal snowfall this winter. Compared to last year's record-setting snowfall, it could feel like significantly less.

They do add that as they expect less snow, the signals aren't exactly clear. So there's always a chance that this could change.

The weather service also encourages people to participate in their Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow network to measure and map participation. Information gathered is used by the National Weather Service, state climatologists, researchers, and more.

As always, the weather is hard to predict, but I'll choose to be optimistic about a slightly warmer winter.
