Grandma’s Marathon weekend kicked off tonight with the William A. Irvin 5K ― the first of three races scheduled for the 39th annual event.

In years pass the heat and humidity have been a factor for this race, but not this year with cooler temps. According to Grandma's Marathon, Thunder Bay, Ontario’s Dominique Aulagnon, 21, won the 3.1-mile race in a time of 15 minutes and 43 seconds. He finished third in the same event last year and second in 2013. John Heitzman, the race’s 2009 champion, of Madison, Wis., finished second in 16:02.

In the women’s division, Hillory Davis, 23, of Colorado Springs, Colo., took the title in 18:14. Lindsey Pierret, of St. Louis Park, Minn., was 16 seconds back in 18:30.

Saturday morning, the Gary Bjorklund Half Marathon gets underway at 6:15am and Grandma's Marathon runners begin their journey at 7:45am.

Good luck to all runners this weekend and a big thank you to all volunteers and spectators.
