Where Does Duluth + Superior Dump All Of This Snow? Here Are A Few Spots
Have you ever wondered where these massive snow banks downtown end up? Lots of people think that city crews scoop up the snow, truck it to Lake Superior, and then dump it into the lake. That may be true for some places in the Great Lakes like Buffalo, but not here in the Twin Ports. Instead, enormous mountains of snow are created just outside of public view.
As soon as city crews catch up with plowing from the snowiest December on record, they'll start removing snow streets and hauling it away. But to where?
Duluth Snow Dump Area
I found a column from a few years back that gives us the answer for Duluth. According to DNT writer Adelie Bergstrom, the city has a contract with the Duluth Port Authority to dump the snow in locations across various business districts along the St. Louis River in West Duluth. That contract is good through 2024.
The exact location isn't shared, because the city doesn't want people to bury trash or chemicals in the snow piles. How disgusting!
City Of Superior Snow Dump Areas
You may have driven by these snow dump areas and never even known it. There are several in Superior. One of the biggest is right in the heart of Superior near UWS. The Mortorelli Drive location is massive. It's right behind the University Of Wisconsin-Superior.
The City Of Superior even allows private contractors who do snow removal to use some of their locations for a fee. Superior lock their gates at the end of the day to prevent anyone from doing illegal dumping.
There also is another location off Stinson Avenue in East End, Superior. It's just down the road between the refinery and East 5th Street.
There's also another dumping area in South Superior, a little more off the beaten path.
With all this snow this year, I'm sure these places are going to start to fill up as soon as crews start working on removing the snow piles in the business district.
