Vikings Add Running Back Ameer Abdullah
Ameer Abdullah, the Detroit Lions' leading rusher two of the past three seasons, is now a member of the Minnesota Vikings. Detroit had released Abdullah and the Vikings claimed him off waivers.
According to StarTribune.com, Abdullah was a 2015 second-round pick out of Nebraska. This season rookie Kerryon Johnson became the Lions' primary running back and with veterans Theo Riddick and LeGarrette Blount also on their roster, Ameer became the odd man out.
With Dalvin Cook working his way back from injury, bringing in Abdullah gives the Vikings a veteran change of pace player and a player who may still have significant upside. If the Vikings lose Cook again, Abdullah would be a nice compliment to Latavius Murray.
Upon adding Ameer Abdullah, the Vikings made room on their roster by waiving tailback Roc Thomas. Thomas is a rookie with potential, but recent hamstring injuries have kept him from contributing on a regular basis.
