Tow Company Scam Reported In Wisconsin

Just when you think scammers have thought of everything, they somehow seem to surprise us! A police department in Wisconsin is warning locals of yet another scam that has been reported in the area and like the others, this one could happen anywhere.

An officer with the Iola Police Department issued the warning, which was then shared by the Waupaca County Sheriff's Office. The scam involves a fake towing company. I don't know about you but I would probably fall for this scam, considering I can't name all the towing companies in Duluth!

The scam first popped up just a few days ago, when they received a news tip about the fake towing company pretending to operate out of the town of Iola, Wisconsin. It didn't take long for law enforcement to discover that the towing company is fake.

The fake towing company has actually used a few different aliases, including the name Rockstar Towing and Trusty Towing. The scammers make the business seem legitimate, even giving a fake address of the towing company, which doesn't exist. They've also used the alias of Crofton Towing Service, according to a local who weighed in on the post.

Despite their different company names, the Iola Police Department says they always use the same fake address, because who would think to drive by a towing company to make sure it was real? They use the address 155 Main Street, which is pretty generic.

So what is their ruse? They say they will send you a tow truck but you have to pay first. You can do so using a debit card, credit card or a cash app. The fake towing companies do have websites, however they don't have that much detail.

If you are in a state of distress, which is likely if you are in need of a tow and stuck somewhere, you probably wouldn't think twice about a towing company. You would also not look for detail on a website to see if it is real. You would want the quickest fix to get out of the situation.
