With winter coming, everyone is busy getting their houses in order for the changing season. Don't forget to also take the necessary steps to make sure your yard trees survive.
My husband and I have a wood burner so we are very conscious of where we get the wood we burn. We found that there are certain counties in Wisconsin that won't allow the transport of wood across county lines due to gypsy moths and the Emerald Ash Borer beetle. The City of Superior is surveying the situation and considering a release of a bio-control agent.
I grew up on County Road 3 in Wrenshall. Technically I lived on what I called the border, because the kids on the other side of the street went to Carlton and I went to Wrenshall. It was cool to have friends in both schools. I was only about two miles from the Chub Lake Tree Farm, it didn't appear until after I had moved to Duluth.
People are starting to prepare their homes and yards for the fall and winter months. Bringing in planters, covering flower beds with tarps and cutting trees and branches that could become a nuisance. I know their mode of thinking, "do it now before the snow flies". There are more and more accidents happening at home involving tree branches and electrical wires, use caution and check ou

We lovingly called the tree on our boulevard the "Pee Tree", because it was the only tree we had that the dog could reach on his chain and he would go for it EVERY time. Unfortunately, that particular dog AND the tree are gone. The dog got old, the tree, not sure, but the City took it down and now we're left with the decision on what to do to replace it. It's been almost a year since the horrendous flooding in our area last June and recovery efforts continue. May is Arbor Month and May 15th will be Arbor Day in Duluth. This year the focus will be planting seedlings and trees to aid in the flood recovery as we continue to rebuild in the Northland.
First, I have to say that this is not causing any issues between me and my two neighbors. In fact, it was discussed last summer and hasn't been brought up again. However, with summer approaching, it might. It's a dilemma and I just want to make everyone happy, but that would be impossible. So, HELP! Here's the story:
I thought, "Now I've heard of everything!" But, there is some logic in taking tree inventory. The information gathered will be used to determine our species diversity, age diversity of the trees, calculate benefits of our urban forest, such as lbs. of carbon sequestered, and the number of gallons of storm water runoff avoided because of the trees, which amounts to more than a million g
Congratulations to Mr. Paul David, Kindergarten Instructor at Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School. They are the recipient of B105's first maurices $200 grant for Service Learning.
The kids have learned why trees are vital to the environment and will plant their seedling trees today! I think it's fantastic that kids this age are learning about the ecosystem and Carbon Cycle. Here's more on t
