Fishing Opener

A lot of motorists will be hitting the road this weekend, looking for their next big Minnesota fishing opener success story.  The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds travelers to plan ahead and use extra care when driving through highway work zones.

Before you head out for the Minnesota fishing opener, make sure you brush up on Minnesota's invasive species laws because, beginning this year, violators who are found guilty of violating those laws will now face more than just a fine.

The Minnesota fishing opener is this Saturday, May 14, and if you chose to fish within a Minnesota state park, participating in the annual event is free and easy.

As thousands of Minnesotans prepare to head out to the lakes for the 2015 fishing opener, I thought it would be a great time to use the Country Throwback to bring back a video starring some of our great listeners.

Wisconsin was last weekend and this weekend it's the highly anticipated Minnesota fishing opener, and the turnout is expected to be substantial.

Really the only way to know for sure if ice is going to be off the lakes is to see it up to the minute for yourself.  Temperatures have been warming up, and ice has been deteriorating, but so far, you can see ice on just about all of these webcams.  Take a look for yourself at some of Northern Minnesota's most popular fishing destinations.

Months ago me and some friends made plans to fish the Wisconsin fishing opener.   We kept the date open, got babysitters lined up, bought our licenses and eagerly waited to get back on the water.  However, it was apparent last week that we were going to have to change plans with the bizarre late spring we've had.

For the first time that I can remember, we are in actual danger of not having open lakes for fishing opener.  No one can say for sure, but we are definitely cutting it close if they do thaw out.  Local reports in the Northland have ice thickness anywhere from 2-3 feet.  That would be comparable to usually mid February thickness.
