Split Rock Lighthouse to Hold Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Beacon Lighting
To commemorate the sinking of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald and the loss of her 29 crew members on November 10, 1975, the Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbors will hold a special Memorial Beacon Lighting.
Beginning at 11:00 a.m. on November 10, visitors will greeted by costumed guides who will provide historic site and shipwreck information. Throughout the afternoon, there will also be an Edmund Fitzgerald film that can be viewed in the visitor center.
Make sure you're there at 4:30 pm, when the lighthouse will temporarily close while the names of the crew members are read to the tolling of a ship's bell. Following the ceremony, the beacon will be lit, and the tower will be open again to tour.
According to Minnesota Historical Society, this is the only opportunity each year when visitors can climb the tower after dark and see the lit beacon.
Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, veterans/active military and college students, and $6 visitors 5-17years old.
