It'll cost $1.2 million, but to anyone who drives that Duluth-side approach to the Oliver Bridge will agree that it's money well spent!  A summer-long road project will see a rebuild of East McCuen Street / Highway 39 - the short section of street that connects Commonwealth Avenue / Highway 23 in Gary New Duluth to the Oliver Bridge.  The work will encompass only about five blocks total, but it should alleviate the massive amount of potholes that have riddled that roadway for years.

According to signage put up by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the work is anticipated to begin Monday, May 13.  MNDOT's web page for the project suggests that it'll last the entire summer - ending before the snow flies.

To accommodate the work, a detour will be set up.  For the majority of the project timeline, drivers will be able to utilize the bridge; follow the signs that will direct eastbound traffic onto East Prescott Street - while westbound traffic will be routed onto East Heard Street.  However, workers expect to replace a deep sanitary line which is located east of 96th Avenue.  That work will bring about a full closure of the roadway - a closure that will also fall during a week night.  (Most work near the Oliver Bridge is performed during the daytime hours only - allowing the roadway to be open for morning and afternoon commutes.)
