Only 39% Of Minnesotans Are Ready For May ID Deadline
I just returned from a flight to Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport, and signage everywhere was trying to get your attention. They want travelers to be REAL ID-ready for the approaching deadline.
What is REAL ID?
Minnesotans have had the option to have a REAL ID-compliant ID card since 2018, but many still don't have one. What's the difference? How can you tell?
Take a look at your driver's license or state-issued identification card. A star marked on the card indicates that it is a fully compliant REAL ID. If you don't have a star, you'll see a notice that says "NOT FOR FEDERAL IDENTIFICATION."
Federal Enforcement Begins on May 7, 2025
Starting May 7th, 2025, Minnesotans 18 years of age or older will not be able to use their standard driver's license to board a domestic flight. There are also certain federal buildings you won't be allowed to enter. According to the state's website, only 39.2% of Minnesotans are ready.

What do I need to get a REAL ID?
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has the requirements listed that you need for a REAL ID.
You need to know your Social Security Number. You need two documents proving your current Minnesota residency, such as your current ID, a utility bill, an income tax return, or a credit card statement.
You'll also need one document proving your identity, such as a birth certificate, a passport, a certificate of citizenship, or a permanent resident card.

Upload documents online and pre-apply.
Go to drive.mn.gov and you can upload your documents and pre-apply. You then can bring the application to a driver's license office.
Read more about requirements and how to get your real ID by visiting the Minnesota Department of Public Safety website.
