It's the 40th anniversary of the Energy Dome, the hat made famous by the 80s band DEVO. Now, it's useful in the time of social distancing.

The hat was worn for their video for "Whip It", but now they are selling a style of the hat with a clear shield to protect you from airborne particles.

As you can see it's just like the ones that DEVO wears, but it has a protective face shield. This looks exactly like some of the protective gear you see healthcare people wearing. Keep in mind, this has not been endorsed by the CDC or any other health organization. This is just something fun that DEVO is trying to have a laugh at and really it looks like it will do what it's set out to do, block airborne particles, just like any other mask. It's also quite stylish.

Impact Merch sells the hats and shields, the PPE kit’s web store listing has DEVO’s Gerard Casale reflecting on the significance of their Energy Domes. At first, these hats were mistaken as flower pots, plastic lampshades, and designer dog bowls, they are now only associated with DEVO which is kind of cool, considering when they first came out they made people laugh.

It was designed according to the ancient ziggurat mound proportions used in votive worship. Like the mounds, it collects energy and recirculates it. In this case, the Dome collects energy that escapes from the crown of the human head and pushes it back into the medulla oblongata for increased mental energy.

If you want it to fit right, the website encourages you to buy a liner that can be adjusted to the size of your head, otherwise, they say, the circulation of energy will not occur correctly.
