It's a very sad day for many as a local hero has lost his fight with cancer. Pine County Sheriff Deputy Ben Neel was on a hunting trip when he collapsed from a seizure. After being rushed to a hospital, doctors discovered he had several tumors on his brain. The Pine County Sheriff's Department has been updating the public with the permission of Ben's family through their Facebook page.

Deputy Neel was very active in the community. During his career he was the school resource officer for Hinkley-Finlayson school. He was also a firearms trainer, taser instructor, and a member of the swat team. Here's more on his life and the circumstances:

I've seen many people comment on social media saying what a wonderful person he was. Sadly, this morning the news came that he had passed away.

There is a fund set up for the family if you wish to donate at Frandsen Bank and Trust, Neel Family Fund, 560 3rd Ave SE, Pine City, MN 55063.
