Morgan Martens Of Brule Wins The 2021 Junior Iditarod
Morgan Martens came home to a hero's welcome, as the Northwestern Middle School student raised his plaque over his head for pictures.
The Superior Telegram reported that signs welcomed the 14-year-old from Brule, WI to the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Superior, where friends and family gathered to congratulate him. Morgan won the Junior Iditarod in Alaska.
The Superior Telegram said Morgan Martens finished the two-day event with a time of 27 hours, 15 minutes, and 20 seconds. There were poor conditions when Martens set out on his journey to win the event, and it was windy the whole drive. Martens kept up an average speed of 9.76 mph on the final leg.
Proud Papa Tim Martens told the Superior Telegram it was the longest race he has ever finished and it was a great learning opportunity and that the whole family is proud. Martens told the Superior Telegram when the race started they could hear the ice crack beneath them.
Morgan said he got off track a little but his lead dogs got him back on track as he passed everyone about the 11-mile mark according to the Superior Telegram. The win netted Martens a new racing sled and a trophy plaque. He was also named Rookie of the Year.
