Heavy road construction near the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is causing the Minnesota Department of Transportation to caution drivers to expect increased delays; MNDOT is recommending drivers add an extra hour to their expected arrival at the airport during the Highway 5 project, which will occur April through October in 2020.

The scope of the project is large;  MNDOT work crews will rebuild Highway 5 and repair several bridges and ramos between 34th Avenue in Bloomington and Highway 62 near Fort Snelling.  Work will initially start with the closure of eastbound Highway 5 in April through mid-summer - probably late July.  Crews will then close westbound Highway 5 from August through October.  Ramps near the Highway 5, Highway 55, and Highway 62 interchange will close in July.  As part of the work, MNDOT will fully-close each direction of Highway 5 - one direction at a time - to complete the project in one summer construction season and best manage the difficult geography of the area.

To better communicate the details of this road work to drivers, MNDOT has launched a special website - in addition to their usual project pages. ; AroundTheAirport.com will aim to help travelers anticipate detours, plan their routes during the closures, and learn more about schedules and travel alternatives.
