Minnesotans Share What It’s Really Like When Your Vehicle Goes Through The Ice
I can't think of a bigger fear while ice fishing than having your vehicle break through the ice. It happens all the time in Minnesota. No ice is 100% safe.
So what's it like when you go through the ice in your vehicle? I saw a post on a Facebook group Ice Fishing Minnesota that asked for lessons learned from people who did go through the ice in an ATV or vehicle.

David posted the question:
Anyone ever break through the ice with a vehicle or ATV before? Any lessons learned you'd care to share with the younger fisherman?
The responses were helpful but also frightening.
The consensus for safety when driving out on the ice is helpful. Keep your speed down to avoid creating waves under the ice. Have your ice picks on you in the vehicle. Have your windows rolled down and your seatbelt off. Keep the doors unlocked. Don't take anyone else's word on ice thickness, check it yourself.

I found Aaron's story about going through the ice very interesting. Here's what he had to say:
- The vehicle drops in seconds, there is no time to think. Keep your windows down
- When you go through, it's not cold. Your adrenaline is so high you won't be cold for the first 30 minutes, after that it becomes deadly.
- Your clothes are super heavy in the water. Kick off your boots and don't wear coveralls. It's hard to swim in coveralls.
- Wear ice picks in the vehicle. It's hard to get out on the ice.
- Your death flashes in front of you, not your life. You imagine your funeral and the people you love being there.
Well if that isn't sobering enough to make you think twice about driving out on the lake, I don't know what would be. Check the ice often, and be careful out there!
