The Minnesota Wild are enjoying a pretty strong season with a record of 18-9-1. There's more life in this team than we have seen in a long time. Part of that has to do with Dollar Bill Kirill and the excitement surrounding this team. Moneypuck.com has now predicted that the Minnesota Wild have a 94.7% chance of making the playoffs this season. That currently puts them just behind their current opponent the Colorado Avalanche.

The Wild lost to the Avalanche last night which jostled the odds a bit. Now the Avalanche have a 97.6% chance of making the playoffs.

The odds are calculated by running a simulation of the rest of the NHL season 100,000 times. Moneypuck claims they can create precise probabilities of the outcome of the season for each team. They use a pre game prediction model and weight different games such as more recent ones in the model. It's a lot of science and numbers beyond me, so you'll have to read about it yourself.

As of today, Monepuck also gives the Wild a 49% chance of making the second round, a 24.9% chance of making the third round, and a 12.2% chance of making the final. Finally they have a 5.8% chance of winning the Stanley cup. That may not sound like a big number, but in comparison they are doing pretty good at 5.8%. The Edmonton Oilers have a 10.5% chance of winning the cup. Colorado has an 8.4% chance, and some other teams are right there with the Wild. So there is a chance.

I for one would like to just see the Wild get past the first round which has been historically hard to do for this team.

Are we getting ahead of ourselves? Absolutely! But isn't that what sports is all about?
