Lotto games are extremely popular in Minnesota, with approximately over 50% reporting they buy a ticket at least once a year.

According to the Minnesota Lottery, the most popular lottery games in the state include the multi-state giants Powerball and Mega Millions, as well as state-exclusive games like Lotto America, the Minnesota Millionaire Raffle, and Gopher 5.

Officials say the Gopher 5 jackpot is won an average of 17.8 times per year, and on Monday, April 27, a lucky winner took home nearly $1 million.

Minnesota Lottery Announces Big Gopher 5 Jackpot Winner

Gopher 5 is a lottery game exclusive to Minnesota. Tickets are $1 per play, and the jackpot starts at $100,000 and grows until someone has all five winning numbers. The Minnesota Lottery notes that a portion of every dollar played helps protect Minnesota’s great outdoors.

Winning numbers are drawn around 6:17 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and players win different amounts of money by matching two, three, four, or five numbers. Match all five numbers, and you win the jackpot, which is what happened recently.

On Monday, April 27, the Gopher 5 jackpot had grown to $968,447. That evening, the following winning numbers were drawn: 16, 18, 32, 38, 43.

Those lucky numbers happened to be on a ticket purchased in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, located in Anoka County in the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities. The winning ticket was purchased at the Kwik Trip located at 9250 Springbrook Drive NW.

As of April 28, the nearly $1 million win is listed as unclaimed, but I bet it won't stay that way for long.  Hopefully, the winner still has their ticket and remembers to check the winning numbers from April 27.

Remember, unless a big Minnesota Lottery winner decides to come forward publicly, we may never know who that winner is. Lottery regulations are in place to protect winners who win over $10,000. Big-money winners can become targets for scammers and fraud, so the Minnesota Lottery will not divulge their name unless they first agree to it.

Remember, if you're a Minnesota Lottery player, you can always use its number checker to see if you're holding a winning ticket.
