Massive Quaker Oats Recall Includes Granola Bars And Granola Cereals Sold In Minnesota + Wisconsin

On Friday, December 15, Quaker Oats issued a nationwide recall that included dozens of their granola bars and granola cereals. The products included in the recall are sold in  Minnesota and Wisconsin.

This recall hit home for me on Friday when our family received notification from Costco that we had purchased recalled granola bars from their Duluth store.

The reason for the big recall is that the Quaker Oats products in question have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Just recently, two Minnesotans died from Salmonella after eating contaminated cantaloupe.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, salmonella infections can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.

Thankfully, Quaker has received no confirmed reports of illness related to the products covered by this recall as of yet. However, due to the salmonella potential with these products, consumers are asked to check their pantries for the recalled products.

It's important to note that his recall only applies to the specific products below. No other Quaker products are impacted.
