There won't be spectators and there won't be a lot of people on the route, but the John Beargrease website still lists volunteer opportunities.

John Beargrease was born to an Anishinabe Chief, Moquabimetem. The John Beargrease Race website says they mainly survived by hunting, fishing, and trapping in Beaver Bay. When he grew older he took a job delivering mail and used his sled dogs to deliver mail from Two Harbors to Grand Marais. The temperatures could be harsh but for 20 years he delivered the mail in those conditions.

The race is in honor of John Beargrease and his accomplishments, but it will look different this year. With COVID-19 making everything harder, the race officials have come up with a plan. There will be a limit of volunteers, and they will limit the volunteers in an area. Obviously, everyone has to wear a mask and social distance.

Like I said before there will be no spectators, but there will be coverage. Enter WDIO, who will be covering the race, people will be able to watch the 2021 Beargrease race start to finish on WDIO.com.  WDIO will also have daily live coverage from anchor Baihly Warfield and sports director Chelsie Brown.

At this time the John Beargrease website is saying they still need volunteers, if you would like to be a part of the race you will have to fill out a form and get it to the organizers. Do it quickly, they are limiting the volunteers.

Ryan Reddington was last year's winner from Alaska and grandson of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race founder. There will be other past winners like Blake and Jennifer Freking of Finland Minnesota. According to the JB Website, there are 18 other race teams.
