Our Northland Signature Golf Hole Tour continues this week - presented by Duluth Dodge, as we highlight the signature hole at courses on the 2022 Northland Golf Card.

What's a signature hole? It's that extra-memorable or unique hole that often stands as the "signature" element of the course. Whether a unique aspect to the green, an interesting hazard, a spectacular view, or any number of other things, these usually are the holes golfers tell their buddies about after visiting a course.

This week, we visited Poplar Golf Course just a short drive from the Twin Ports area in Poplar, Wisconsin.

Poplar Golf Course has a special place in the heart of both Ken and I, being a fun 9-hole course that offers some unique challenges and a casual atmosphere that welcomes players of all skill levels.

A lot of people think of Poplar as a "short course", playing 2,008 yards from the back tees. While it isn't the longest course on the Northland Golf Card, varied elevation and other hazards, including the neandering Middle River, reward touch and accuracy and will challenge your game.

This course stands as a par-31 course for men and par-33 for women, featuring two 300+ yard holes, so you can still get out the driver a couple of times.

In discussing the signature hole for this course, Ken and I agreed that the two holes that most directly involved the Middle River were at the top of the list. The par-3 8th hole plays up, over the river with a short approach from the teebox to the green. The other hole, the par-3 5th, ended up winning out for both of us though.

The 5th plays downhill, over the river, and through a line of trees that demands quite a bit of accuracy to navigate directly to the green. Playing 156 yards downhill from the men's tees, a well-placed hit "through the uprights" of a pair of tall pine trees will reward you with an exciting finish to this hole.
