There’s a term that is associated with the Holidays that really stands out for most people and that’s “hustle and bustle”. The origin of the phrase speaks to the shopping that people are doing around Christmas. But I think these days it means we’re adding the shopping responsibilities we have to an already jammed schedule.

In a perfect world, everyone we encounter this time of year is truly looking out for the betterment of other people, but let’s be honest, it seems there are more people trying to take advantage of others than ever before.

This was a topic that intrigued the staff at Wallethub, who have compiled the list of states in America that are most vulnerable to theft and fraud.

Minnesota ranks just outside the Top 10 as the 12th most likely state to be swindled. The money focused website used 14 key factors to come up with their findings, and they range from identity theft complaints to the average loss due to fraud.

Our state is the 8th worst for identity theft, and 21st worst for fraud.

How does that stack up to neighboring states to Minnesota?

Residents in South Dakota ranked worse than Minnesota, coming in 4th for most issues. They were 7th in identity theft and 11th in fraud.

North Dakota fared far better than South Dakota coming in 22nd. Their breakdown is really good when it comes to identity theft, 45th. But they did not do so well for fraud, finishing 5th worst.

Iowa finished 10th overall while Wisconsin exceeded us all coming in 45th.

No real surprise the area that had the worst rating for fraud and identity theft is the District of Columbia.

Let this serve as a reminder to take precautions with your bank accounts and credit cards this holiday season. There are too many people out there trying to take what you’ve worked hard to get.
