Minnesota Now One of the Best States for the American Dream
What is the American Dream?
Growing up, I always thought it meant owning a house with a white picket fence. Being married with three kids and a dog. Basically being that family everyone else is trying to keep up with… right?
Fast forward to today, and I’m married with one kid, three dogs, and a house with no fence. But honestly? I still feel like I’m living the dream.
(Okay… maybe slightly overextended at times trying to keep up with the Joneses, but still.)
The thing is, the American Dream doesn’t look the same for everyone. But at its core, the idea hasn’t really changed.
It’s still about having the chance to build a better life for yourself… and feeling like that’s actually possible. And depending on where you live… that might be easier said than done.

According to a new study from the company DuelBits, some states make that dream a little more achievable than others. And Minnesota is one of those states!
The study looked at things like homeownership rates, education levels, average salaries, debt, life expectancy, and even vehicle ownership to rank all 50 states.
Minnesota Now One of the Best States for the American Dream:
So… where does Minnesota land?
Pretty high, actually.
Minnesota came in #5 overall, landing in the top five states where the American Dream is considered most attainable.
Here’s how the top five shook out:
- New Jersey
- Massachusetts
- Connecticut
- Vermont
- Minnesota
And when you look at the numbers, it actually makes a lot of sense.
Minnesota has a homeownership rate of just over 71%, which is higher than the national average. And in Rochester, it’s even higher at closer to 74%.
On top of that, Minnesota's median household income sits around $87,000 a year, according to U.S. Census data. In Rochester, that figure is closer to $89,000.
