Most Americans aren't experts at cooking a turkey. Myself included. The majority of us buy this giant bird just once a year and that is for Thanksgiving. If you've got yours in the refrigerator right now getting ready for its golden debut in a few days, there is one important question that everyone is wondering - should we wash our turkey in the sink before we get it ready to cook? Thanks to the USDA Food Safety & Inspection Service, we have the answer.
MINNESOTA: We Now Know If You Should Wash Your Turkey Before Cooking
Americans are spending over $983 million this Thanksgiving on just turkeys! While that number might seem astronomical, we are forking over less cash in 2024 because in 2023, that number was $1.2 billion. Before you turn that oven on or start the marinade process, should you wash your turkey in the sink to get it clean?
According to the USDA Food Safety & Inspection Service X (formerly known as Twitter) page, a common misconception in the kitchen is about how we handle a turkey.
"DON'T WASH YOUR TURKEY! Washing will spread bacteria & won't even clean your bird! Cooking thoroughly is the only way to destroy any potentially dangerous bacteria.
If you get out a giant cutting board to set the turkey on - wash it.
If your turkey was on a counter - wash it.
If you used a giant knife or fork on the raw turkey - wash it.
After you touch the raw turkey - wash your hands for at least 20 seconds in warm water and with soap.
