TRIED IT! This New Way To Kill Fruit Flies in Minnesota Is Amazing
If you saw me through the window in the Y-105FM studio today, you would have been concerned. My arms were waving around. I was ducking and then would wheel my chair out of the way to a new spot...still while waving frantically.
I promise I am ok. The issue is simple - fruit flies have invaded my little, tiny area...and they won't leave me alone! I would bring my apple vinegar fruit fly killing machine to the office, but I found another solution to kill these annoying little pests. Once the fruit flies show up where you are, you'll want to use this, too.

Fruit Flies Are Attacking Homes in Minnesota Right Now
If you have any ripe bananas on your counter, the fruit flies are going to find them. According to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, the highest number of fruit flies are typically seen during the months of August and September. In other words, we are in the peak season for fruit flies!
Orkin has indicated that a female fruit flies can begin breeding when they are just two days old and will lay about 5 eggs at a time. In total though, a fruit fly can lay about 400 eggs during their lifetime.

Besides looking like a fool as I'm swatting fruit flies in the air, another reason why I don't like these pests is that they can cause gastrointestinal discomfort and diarrhea in humans. It is rare, but it can happen.
Most of us have enough acid in our stomachs to combat anything that an annoying fruit fly might give us - so don't worry about that too much. Wash all of your fruit before you eat it and your chances decrease quite a bit.
For me, the annoying factor of fruit flies is why I want them all to disappear from my space. I used to swear by the apple cider vinegar tactic to get rid of them, which does work, and I have it below for you in case you want to try it. I think I found a new favorite, though, and so far, it seems to be working even better!
Do you see the glowy item that is plugged in on the wall in my kitchen? That is my secret gadget to kill fruit flies!
Obviously, from looking at this photo, you can see that it kills any type of bug that flies near it. The inside is like a big piece of sticky tape. Bugs have no chance once they hit this.
You don't have to throw the entire thing away once it is mostly full. There are inserts that you can put in to replace the sticky part, and it is extremely easy to use.
My secret weapon this year is Zevo. I got this at either Costco or Walmart. (Psst...I just looked at the prices and right now at Walmart, there is a $5.00 coupon you can use online on a Zevo corded device, not the same as what I have, but similar - here's where I found it.)
...and the fruit fly in the studio better enjoy its last days because I am plugging one in there next.
...and since I know someone is going to think, "Oh, Zevo paid her to say all of this"...no, Zevo is NOT paying me to tell you any of this. They could! I am very much open to that. Truthfully, I'm telling you because fruit flies annoy me, and this product has helped me tremendously.
Here's How You Can Easily Kill Fruit Flies With Apple Cider Vinegar
You are more than welcome to have a professional pest control service help you, as Orkin's website recommended, you can try the Zevo product, or you can use this trustworthy method below, too.
- Step 1: Find a glass or container
- Step 2: Put an inch...or whatever amount you want (this isn't science) in the container
- Step 3: Cover the container with saran wrap and secure it. Make sure nothing can sneak out of it on the sides. (I use Cling Wrap or Saran Wrap with a rubber band)
- Step 4: Cut some slits in the Saran Wrap or plastic so the fruit flies can get in.
- Step 5: Wait 24 hours or so and empty out the dead fruit flies. If the pests are still bothering you, repeat all of the steps until the problem goes away.
Fruit flies also love to hang out in your bathroom and sink drains so Rentokil.com suggests you clean those regularly.
