It's State Fair time in most of the Nation, and definitely here in the Midwest. The Minnesota State Fair started this week, and there are some things you need to try!

Every year we get a list of the new foods and drinks that will be offered at the fair.  This year there are 63 new drinks, of all different types, and also over 30 new foods.  One of those new foods is the deep fried Ranch Dressing.  That one comes with a question of "how do they do that"?

According to the Minnesota State Fair website:

Ranch dressing filling made with ranch seasoning, buttermilk and cream cheese in a panko shell, deep-fried and dusted with ranch powder. Served with a side of hot honey sauce crafted with Cry Baby Craig's hot sauce. (Vegetarian)

I thought that was a bit crazy,  but I saw someone's review of the new food as they tried it on the first day of the fair, which was yesterday. This is from Bring Me the News, and here is their review:

The ranch flavor was on point. The cream cheese center was mixed with dry ranch dressing mix so it wasn’t runny like the ranch you would buy in a bottle. The coating was perfectly crispy and the outside was dusted with more ranch seasoning. The hot honey on the side balanced it all out.

Other state fairs that have gotten creative with new foods as well.  The top 5 Google searched fair foods (which does include the deep fried ranch dressing),  also includes deep fried butter, deep fried lemonade, deep fried beer (that one looks a little gross, btw), and deep fried bubble gum.  Yep, bubble gum.  2 out of those 4 are located at the Texas State Fair, and the deep fried lemonade is located at the Wisconsin State Fair.

The deep fried beer honestly looks a little like moldy ravioli to me.  Appetizing, right?  You can see that here.

I don't think I would try the deep fried bubble gum.  Weird.  But the deep fried lemonade sounds pretty good.  Here is the description from the Wisconsin State Fair website.

Made with Hawaiian sweet rolls dipped in a French toast batter, a homemade lemonade curd filling, deep-fried to golden perfection, and tossed in a lemon sugar with a drizzle of icing.

Unfortunately, those lemonade things were at the Wisconsin State Fair, so that one might have to wait until next year.  But definitely try the new foods here at the Great Minnesota Get-together going on now through Labor Day.
