It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere: Look What You Can Now Do to Celebrate Jimmy Buffett’s Legacy
It's impossible to find an outdoor party anywhere in America where you won't hear Jimmy Buffett's biggest hits playing. It has somehow been a year since we lost the beachy singer-songwriter, but his music lives on.
Now, if you are a student at the University of Florida, you can celebrate the "Margaritaville" singer's legacy and earn college credit, too.
The University of Florida is offering a class honoring Buffett, per a local Fox affiliate in Orlando. It's a one-credit elective course, and it goes through the singer's library of hits, as well as his career and lifestyle.
It's believed to be the only class of its kind in the States.
"I hope that the students gain a larger appreciation of him, more than just his main songs," the professor leading the course, Melissa Johnson, says. Though it's a small class — just 12 students — it's an important one.
"I want them to appreciate the depth of the music as well as what a gifted storyteller and songwriter he was, but also look at his legacy and impact – including the recent renaming of State Road A1A to Jimmy Buffett Memorial Highway."
It's important to teach America's young adults about history, and that includes the history of great American music.
The University of Florida also offers a class on Taylor Swift.
Jimmy Buffett died on Sept. 1, 2023, after a quiet battle with skin cancer. He was 76.
