I was getting some gas at a Kwik Trip in Duluth the other day, and after going into the store and walking back to my car, I was startled by a loud noise coming from somewhere on the building.

Being a curious person, I had to figure out what the sound was and where it was coming from. After a short investigation, I found the culprit, and it might surprise you what its purpose is.

This Screeching Sound Was Not a Bird, But It Was About Birds

The sound coming from a little green box mounted on the side of the building was intense. It sounded like a prehistoric bird fight, and it was LOUD.

It turns out this box is a device used to scare away nuisance birds, like gulls. The BirdXPeller Pro is a sonic bird deterrent that randomly plays digital sounds of real bird distress calls and predator cries.

These sounds are designed to confuse, frighten, and disorient pest birds, discouraging them from hanging around the property. The company claims this is a humane way to deal with nuisance birds, and each unit can cover up to one acre.

From what I saw, it works. I was about ready to run for my life when I heard it—and the few gulls nearby took flight immediately, clearing the area fast.

Scaring Gulls for a Cleaner, Safer Space

The makers of the BirdXPeller Pro say their products can help protect properties from the damage caused by corrosive bird droppings. They also claim it can reduce health risks and liability issues some birds bring with them.

My only question now is, can we build a giant one and clear the entire town of pesky gulls?

9 Unlikely New Names for Minnesota's Xcel Energy Center

After 25 years, Xcel Energy is stepping away from its naming rights deal with the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. A new sponsor is expected to sign a long-term, high-dollar agreement to rename the arena with the Minnesota Wild.

While several major brands are rumored to be in the running, we couldn’t help but think of some uniquely Minnesota companies that would make amazing (and hilarious) naming rights partners—if only they had the budget or interest.
