Surprise! Snowfall Totals Across Northern Minnesota From Wednesday Include Over A Foot In Some Places

If you've ventured onto the internet after a snowstorm in the last few years, you've undoubtedly seen memes poking fun at how Minnesotans & Wisconsinites are never happy with how the snow forecast compares to how much we actually get. Didn't get as much as was forecasted? "Way to hype up this nothing storm". Got way more than was forecasted? "How did they get things so wrong?". I don't envy meteorologists. There's always someone mad at them.

Well, we just had one of those instances of getting more than was forecasted. In some cases, nearly double the amount of snow expected. What a March Wednesday surprise!

The forecast earlier this week called for 2-5 inches of snow across much of the Northland, with a band from the Brainerd Lakes area, through the Twin Ports area, out to the Bayfield Peninsula that could see up to 8 or so inches of snow. Now that the snow has stopped, we're actually seeing some snow reports nearly double that amount across the Northland.

To be clear, I'm not pointing that out to pick on the National Weather Service. Just because I, like many other Northlanders, found myself surprised by just how much snow we actually got Wednesday. Forecasting weather is legitimately hard. I have no beef with the forecast compared to what we actually got across the region. Just a bit of surprise.

Now that this round of snow is wrapped up, things will remain quiet for a few days. We'll see a mix of clouds and sun through most of the weekend with daytime highs getting to near 30 today, then into the mid-30s for Friday and the weekend. Our next chance at snow comes Sunday afternoon and evening, carrying into Monday.
