Superior School District Snow Day Policy 2024: What Parents Need to Know
With winter approaching, the Superior School District has released its snow day guidelines, along with an important update for families. Let's break down what you need to know about keeping your kids safe and learning during those tricky winter months.
When winter weather hits, the district works closely with the National Weather Service in Duluth and monitors conditions daily. They're checking everything from wind chills to road conditions, making sure both city and county roads are safe for travel.

Like the last few years, the first two snow days will be traditional "no school" days. After that, any additional closures will switch to virtual learning. This helps meet state requirements for instructional hours without extending the school year into summer.
Sometimes weather changes quickly, and elementary and middle school devices (laptops) might not make it home before a closure. Don't worry - teachers are prepared for this. If your household doesn't have access to other devices, teachers will provide simple alternatives like reading, math practice, or physical activities.
The district will notify families through multiple channels - SchoolMessenger, social media, and local media - by 5:30 AM if school is canceled. When conditions warrant closure, all activities, including sports and after-school programs, are canceled unless otherwise noted.
Most importantly, even when school remains open, parents always have the final say. If you feel conditions aren't safe in your area, you can keep your kids home. The district understands that conditions can vary significantly across Douglas County, especially with lake effect snow.
