The calendar just turned to September, and Mother Nature decided to remind us fall is arriving in Minnesota with a dose of chilly temperatures.

The National Weather Service's Duluth office issued a heads-up at the start of the week to people across Northern Minnesota that our first sub-freezing temperatures could be just a matter of days away.

What is the forecast saying?

As we head into the weekend, temperatures in Northern Minnesota are expected to sink on Friday and Saturday, with daytime highs struggling to get above 60 degrees, and overnight lows flirting with the freezing point in the low to mid-30s.

There are some smaller chances of frost in some areas on Thursday and Sunday nights, but Friday and Saturday nights appear to offer the greatest chances.

This would put a sizable part of the Northland in line for potentially seeing the first frost of the season. If you have plants outdoors, it is a good idea to start thinking about that frost threat as we head into the weekend.

Of the two nights, Friday night into Saturday morning appears to be the night with slightly greater overall odds of frost, but both nights do present a notable chance, especially in low-lying areas away from Lake Superior.

Places inland from the North Shore and on the Iron Range present some of the best chances of frost on these nights, as depicted in the yellow color on the map below.

Will warmer temperatures return?

The good news is, yes! It looks like the dose of cooler fall weather will be relatively short. The extended forecast for next week shows daytime highs getting back into the mid-70s, with overnight temperatures notably warmer, in the 50s.
