Minnesota Animal Shelter Shares Update In The Wake Of Devastating Flooding
A Northern Minnesota animal shelter is dealing with the aftermath of what they called "severe flooding" that closed down the shelter late last week. In the wake of this, the organization is sharing some updates.
Animal Allies Humane Society in Duluth took to social media on Friday (January 17) to let the public know that they believed a sprinkler system pipe had burst due to freezing, leading to severe flooding in portions of their facility.
They were able to report that all of the animals remained safe following the flooding. While that crucial piece of news was good to hear, there was still a lot of damage and aftereffects from the flooding.
In a video posted on Friday, you can see standing water covering the floor of one of their spaces, with water coming from the ceiling and several ceiling panels damaged and that had fallen to the floor from the water.

In an update over the weekend, the shelter announced they would be reopening and provided some updates on what they had lost due to the flooding.
The first thing they shared was that while they initially believed the flooding had occurred due to a frozen pipe bursting, they later found that the flooding may have been the result of what they called "a larger issue surrounding the structural integrity of our piping".
They shared that they will be working to take all of the necessary steps to keep anything like this from happening again.
In the meantime, they shared a list of things lost in the flooding, which included a number of supplies for their youth camps and activities, a projector screen, a laptop, a cart full of electronics, Zoom camera, window shades, their entire phone conference and projector system, and some other items.
The greatest impacts were on their humane education room and their administrative offices. They reiterated that the animals and their space are all fine.
As they work to clean up the mess and restore their building, they do note a couple of things. First, they will be open for regular hours. Second, they do have a need fro financial help to deal with the effects of the flooding.
How can I help Animal Allies?
The combined needs of replacing the lost equipment and repairing the space (cleaning up, replacing the ceiling, mold prevention, and restoration of the impacted spaces) won't be cheap.
While they do have insurance that will help with elements of the above needs, Animal Allies says via their social media that not everything is covered.

If you'd like to make a donation, either in the form of items, labor, or money, they encourage anyone interested to contact them via social media.
Specifically when it comes to money donations, they do have a means to donate via Facebook and they also shared their Venmo username, which is AnimalAlliesDLH.
