Mother nature apparently doesn't realize that our 2015 shipping season has started since we're expecting 3-5 inches of snow tonight through Thursday, but the first laker, the John G. Munson departed the harbor on Monday to kick it off!

Photographer Tim Mlodozyniec captures a beautiful ship departing under our iconic Aerial Lift Bridge with many more photos to come as the shipping season continues in Twin Ports.  Another laker was seen traveling out of the port last evening, the Mesabi Miner.

It's amazing that our shipping season is starting this early because the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that 60% of Lake Superior is still ice covered.  However, we have seen the two Coast Guard Cutters out doing their best to open a path for our ships.

According to our media partners, WDIO.com, water levels in several of our great lakes are a bit higher than usual which allows for the ships to take a slightly heavier load.

Three other ships that have been in our harbor will depart later this month or in April.
