If you're looking for a perfect Northland road trip this Mother's Day and throughout the rest of the year, then take a scenic drive up the North Shore to enjoy amazing treats!

Great! Lakes Candy Kitchen is now open for the season in Knife River, which is just about a 25 minute drive from the Duluth area. It's a beautiful drive and and very tasty stop.

Great! Lakes Candy Kitchen is located at 223 Scenic Drive in Knife River and they specialize in handmade chocolate and candies. According to the their website:

We are 3rd & 4th generation candy makers following our family recipes from over 100 years of tradition. All our candy is handmade the old-fashioned way, cooked in copper kettles, hand stirred and made in small batches. Our candies are made with quality ingredients using lots of whipping cream, grade AA butter and fine chocolate.

They officially opened on April 27, which is a few days earlier than expected. That's a nice change from many seasonal businesses forced to open later than usual due to our cold, wet spring.

Great! Lakes Candy Kitchen is now open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. This is a terrific local business that prides itself on following a tradition of over 100 years of fine candy making, which originated on Minnesota’s Iron Range in 1905 by founder Gust Canelake.

A bonus for the kids is their Bear Trail, which is an easy hike in their wooded lot next to the shop. "Designed by artist and store co-owner, Patricia Canelake, the Bear Trail, is a short and gentle trail for kids and adults alike."

The Great! Lakes Candy Kitchen will remain open daily now through December 23.
