Freshpet Select Dog Food Recall Details
A popular brand of pet food is being recalled due to concerns about contamination. Freshpet Inc. has announced a voluntary recall of a single lot of their Freshpet Select Fresh From The Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken Recipe dog food. The concern is the potential for salmonella contamination.
According to details shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the current recall only includes that single lot - sold in a 4.5 pound bag, with a sell by date of 10/29/22. The "Freshpet Team has designated this single lot for destruction, but a small portion of the lot was inadvertently shipped to retailers in limited geographic markets in the last two weeks".
The effects of salmonella contamination and illness can be severe. Additionally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers of the potential threat to human beings as well - which can come from "handling contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or surfaces exposed to these products".
The FDA provides the following concerns for salmonella contamination for both humans and pets:
Humans: Healthy people infected with salmonella should monitor themselves for some of all of the following symptoms:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
- Abdominal cramping
- Fever
Dogs: pets should be monitored for the following symptoms:
- Lethargy
- Diarrhea or bloody diarrhea
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Decreased appetitie
- Abdominal pain
Infected but otherwise healthy dogs can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled pet food, you're urged to contact a veterinarian.
Consumers who have pet food products matching the recall details should immediately stop feeding it to their dogs. The food should be disposed of right away. Here are pictures of both the front and the back of the packaging:
