Since 2019, the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild has hosted the MN Brewers Cup Awards. This is a state-wide, blind taste-test competition for Minnesota breweries and brewpubs.

This year, over 450 beers were entered into the competition from over 90 Minnesota breweries and brewpubs. Once all the beers were submitted, they were organized into 23 categories based on style, and then entries were judged blind by 20 beer judges based on how well each submission represented the standards of its style. For the first time this year, Hard Seltzers were added as a category.

The results of the 2023 MN Brewers Cup were recently announced at an award ceremony in St. Paul. The top three in each style category, along with the top three overall, were announced and Duluth had an outstanding showing.

A Duluth-made beer took home the top prize in 5 categories: American Wheat & Cream Ales, Dark Lagers, German Ales, Strong Ales, and English, Scottish & Irish Ales.

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
