I love Aldi because, quite honestly, it's probably the only way I can afford to feed my family these days. I have two growing kid,s and they eat an insane amount of food. I remember when mom used to complain about me eating them out of house and home, and now I get to experience that food bill. (Although it is much higher these days.)

So I shop at Aldi a lot. The discount grocery store has some great prices on the staples you need in your house. I buy potatoes, bread, buns, lettuce, cheese, some meat, frozen stuff, Clancy's chips, pizzas, condiments, and snacks for the kids. I've done price comparisons before, and I save 30-40% on my grocery bill by shopping there.

Chowhound's Suzanne S. Wiley wrote a story about the best high-quality meat departments at grocery store chains in the United States. Aldi made the list for its beef. Why beef? You can save a lot of money on beef as they do markdowns with a 50% price cut as it gets closer to the date.

Also, Chowhound applauds Aldi for its lenient return policy, so you can return bad meat without an issue. They do say to make sure and check the expiration date on the discounted meat before you purchase.

Chicken - Not So Much

According to Chowhound, customers have complained about "woody" chicken breasts at Aldi. They point out it's not the chain's fault, but an industry issue. There's actually a thing called "woody chicken," which is when the meat is kind of tough and can be discolored. When it's raw, it has a more pale look to it.

I do buy and enjoy the Southwest Style Seasoned Chicken. I've never had a problem with it, and it's really tasty. I usually buy fresh cilantro, guacamole, fresh pico de Gallo, and make burrito bowls using the chicken. It's fantastic.

I've also purchased frozen chicken tenderloins and never had an issue, either.
