Deadline Approaching – Why Minnesota Residents Need A Real ID Now
The Real ID deadline is approaching, and even if your current driver's license hasn't expired yet, you'll need to get a Real ID.
What is the Real ID?
REAL ID ACT was passed by Congress in 2005. It establishes minimum security standards for state-issued ID cards. It's a part of the federal anti-terrorism laws.
REAL ID (or other documents) will be required to board a commercial plan or enter a federal building.
Everyone over the age of 18 will need a Real ID to board a plane. You also will need a real ID to enter any federal building like military bases or nuclear power facilities. Not sure how often the entering of nuclear power plants comes up, but good info to keep in your back pocket.

What documentation do you need to get a REAL ID?
- A document providing identity, date of birth, and legal presence in US.
- A document providing social security number
- Two different documents proving residency in Minnesota
Deadline For REAL ID is May 7, 2025.
Effective May 7, 2025, federal agencies will require a real ID. So you've got about a year to get your documents together. It's important to know also that your documents cannot be laminated. They also cannot be on your phone or digital, they must be in physical form and you must be present.
