Mining Near BWCA Latest Example Of AI Data Centers Impact On Environment
By now, I'm sure you're aware that the US Senate narrowly passed a bill overturning protections put in place on the Superior National Forest. A Chilean mining company wants to open up Twin Metals Minnesota, a proposed copper mine, in the Superior National Forest near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
Copper Mining In Northern Minnesota
Environmentalists are outraged. People who love the BWCA are fighting against it. The worry is that the copper mines will release sulfide, damaging the pristine waters of Northern Minnesota.

There is a right to be concerned. The same conglomerate behind Twin Metals, Antofagasta, was recently fined by the Chilean Government for "failing to properly follow water management protocol."
AI Data Centers Are Creating Huge Demand For Copper
Once again, data centers are to blame. Data centers are used to power artificial intelligence, and they require a lot of power for processing and water for cooling. All of that requires copper. With so many data centers being built across not only the US, but the globe, copper prices will keep going up. An estimated 1.1-2.4 million tons of copper will be needed for data centers by 2035.
Mining The Duluth Complex
The Duluth Complex is a stretch of land containing precious metals in the Arrowhead region. It's one of the largest deposits of copper in the United States, and the US uses far more copper than it produces. Chile leads the world in copper production, so they look to expand production into Northern Minnesota.

Copper Is Needed For Data Centers & National Security
People are pushing back against AI Data Centers in their communities. The reality is we've already opened Pandora's Box with artificial intelligence, and now it's a technology race for global powers like the US and China to stay ahead of the game. That means there will be more data centers, more mining for materials to support them.
