Duluth Canal Park Video Of Boat Surfing Huge Waves Has Over 15 Million Views + Counting
I recently stumbled on a YouTube 'shorts' video of a boat wrestling huge waves under the Lift Bridge in Duluth's Canal Park. The boat was from the US Coast Guard, and it appears they were training on handling the vessel in rough weather and large waves.
The video was shot by the YouTube channel South Pier Lighthouse. It's actually back from 3 years ago.
You can see in the longer video that the Coast Guard ship USCG RBM-44 was entering the Duluth Ship Canal during high winds and waves.
Then would turn around, head back out, and surf the waves back in.
Since it was shared on YouTube 'Shorts' category, it's been viewed over 15 million times! This video is one of the most viewed from Duluth.
There are over 1300 comments on the video. Most people were commending the Captain of the boat for their skill in handling the waves. Others used the video as a warning to others about the power of the lakes. Some say, "No wonder that the lake has taken so many vessels over the years."
Every year we get crazy waves and storms, especially in the spring and fall in Duluth. Recently waves actually broke the pedestrian gate on the North Pier, putting people in danger.
Remember, Lake Superior is nothing to joke about, and the Coast Guard trains so that they can go out and rescue when weather gets this bad. If you are going out in a boat on Lake Superior, make sure you have a marine radio to monitor weather, and follow all the regulations.
