Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Lake Superior Zoo Goes Green This Year

It's an annual event that your family looks forward to, the Easter Egg Hunt at the Lake Superior Zoo.  This year is no different, your whole family is invited to continue or start a new tradition.  What IS different is the Lake Superior Zoo is "going GREEN" with the event featuring 'eco eggs'!  Let me explain.

The Lake Superior Zoo will be using 2,000 “eco eggs” for its Easter EGG-stravaganza this Saturday, March 30, 2013 from 10 am – 1 pm.

So, what is an “eco egg"?  It's made from a plant-based plastic that is compostable and sustainable. They are 100% renewable do not contain BPA and are non-toxic, making them better for the environment and better for kids, plus it helps the zoo stay focused with their mission of conservation.

Samantha Avery, who is a member of the zoo’s guest services team recommended the use of eco eggs this year after doing some research.  The best part was that the compostable plastic eggs were actually developed and sold by a Minnesota-based company.

The zoo is expecting to host hundreds of children on Saturday for the egg hunt. “eco eggs are very well made and are larger than standard plastic eggs.

While the zoo does not anticipate needing to dispose of the eco eggs in the foreseeable future, once their life-expectancy has run out, the eggs will fully decompose in an industrial compost at the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) in Duluth.
