Someone In Minnesota Just Won A Whopping $34 Million

I think just about everyone has stood in line at the gas station, stared up at the jackpot sign, and let themselves daydream for a second about what they'd do if they ever won a massive jackpot.

Somebody in Minnesota just turned that daydream into a very real fortune by purchasing a Lotto America ticket.

Lotto America is a multi-state game played across roughly a dozen states, with drawings every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. A play costs just a buck.

To win the big one, you have to match all five white-ball numbers, drawn from 1 to 52, plus the Star Ball, drawn from 1 to 10. Nail all six and the whole jackpot is yours. It's long odds, but somebody's got to win eventually, and this weekend, somebody did.

$34.12 Million Winning Ticket Sold In Minnesota

The Minnesota Lottery reports that a ticket for the Saturday, July 18 drawing matched all six numbers, good for a state-record jackpot of $34.12 million.

The winning numbers, in case you're digging that crumpled ticket out of your cupholder right now, were 13, 17, 22, 28, and 40, with a Star Ball of 3.

The winning ticket was sold at the Holiday Stationstore at 601 Coon Rapids Boulevard in Coon Rapids. Reports indicate it's the first time all year the Lotto America jackpot has been hit, and it's the largest Lotto America prize in Minnesota history.

"This is an exciting and historic moment for Minnesota Lottery players," Minnesota Lottery Executive Director Adam Prock said in a statement. "A jackpot win of this magnitude creates excitement across the state."

Take the Annuity, or Grab the Cash?

Here's the fun-math part. The lucky winner has a choice to make.

They can take the full $34.12 million as an annuity, paid out over 29 years in 30 increasing payments. Or they can grab the lump-sum cash option, which comes to $15.15 million right now.

It's the classic lottery dilemma: the bigger long-term number, or the smaller pile of money today. Either way, it beats another Monday.

How the Winner Claims the Prize

Whoever is holding that ticket should sign the back and keep it somewhere very safe.

The winner has one year from the drawing to claim the prize, and it must be done in person at Minnesota Lottery headquarters in Roseville.
