I was excited to see last night's episode because I hoped it would give us some insight into who Mike WAS.  For such a straight shooting guy, we always wondered what caused him to "Break Bad."  In 'Breaking Bad' he was Gus Fring's right hand man, and a sometimes accomplice to Saul's shady business.   So what was his story?  We found out last night. [SPOILERS AHEAD]

Mike had a son "Matty."  Matty was on the force with Mike and was a good honest cop.  He was pressured to be "on the take" with the other cops.  They didn't trust him and killed him.  In a heart breaking scene, Mike tells Matt's widow (his daughter-in-law) that Mike told Matty to take the money and do something good with it, because Mike had been "on the take" all those years.  Matty did, but they still didn't trust him and killed him anyway.

We also learned that Mike had a drinking problem,  "Drinking himself unconscious every night."

We see a scene where Mike goes to his local bar.  His hands shaking, he takes a drink.  He stumbles over to his son's killers and says, "I know it was you..."

In another example of great writing and a great show, we are left to wonder if Mike is setting a trap, or if he's really drunk.  Those sames two crooked cops pick him up, put him in their squad car and bring him out to a remote location where they discuss killing Mike.  But wait!  Mike had planted a gun in the squad and now sober as a judge kills the two.  No mercy.  Of course, in the process he takes a bullet in the shoulder, which explains the opening scene.

Jonathan Banks did such an amazing job this episode.  He carried the whole episode, with only about 2 minutes of Jimmy McGill.  It's so nice seeing one of our favorite characters again on TV, even if we know his ultimate fate.  'Better Call Saul' once again entertains.
