Yes, there is a National Day for a lot of things, so why should pie be left out?!?!  My favorite is pecan with whipped cream or french silk.  My hubby and daughter are pumpkin fans.  Today is a day to celebrate and indulge in YOUR favorite.  It would make the American Pie Council very happy!

According to the American Pie Council, the first pies were made by early Romans, but it's been said they may have learned about pie through the Greeks. However, the first pie recipe was published by the Romans and was for a rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie.  Glad we've evolved to french silk!

The first pies didn't contain sugar (as I would like), they were mostly meat pies.   Often made using fowl and the legs were left to hang over the side of the dish and used as handles. That would be a frightening sight now days.  As far as fruit pies go, English tradition credits the first cherry pie to Queen Elizabeth I.

The first English settlers cooked their pies in long narrow pans calling them "coffins". As in the Roman times, the early American pie crusts often were not eaten, but simply designed to hold the filling during baking.  Over the years, pie has evolved to become what it is today "the most traditional American dessert". Thus,  the term "as American as apple pie."

Steve Tanko is a foodie and during the morning show he gave us his pie making tips.  They were:

1.  use cold water, cold butter, don't over work the crust and chill it before you roll it

2.  don't be afraid of lard  (I'm not, I'm afraid of yeast)!

What's your favorite pie?
