Isn't that the way it always goes?  The kids can't wait for school to get out for break, then they're bored.  Suddenly, you become the "activities director" and have to come up with stuff to do that is affordable, but fun.  The City of Duluth has you covered!  Skating, snowshoeing, bonfires and more!

 

Everyone regardless of age is invited to enjoy making memories with fun activities thanks to the City of Duluth Parks and Recreation department.  All events are available to your family at no charge.

After the Christmas holiday excitement dies down head to the DECC ice arena  at 350 Harbor Drive.  On Sunday, December 28, there will be FREE open ice skating from 3-5 PM. You'll need your own skates and children under 10 years old must be supervised by an accompanying adult. Be sure to mark your calendars, the next scheduled open skate  at the DECC ice arena is January 25, 2015 from 3-5 pm.

Then on Monday, December 29 get the family to the Bayfront Family Center, 353 Harbor Drive the Family Center will be open and have snowshoes, sleds and children's sizes of cross country skis available for trial use, as well as ice skates in many sizes. Dress warm, this one is outside.  The equipment is provided for temporary use on site at no charge to the public. Parking lot is accessible off of Railroad Street.  This is a great way for your kids to "try" something before you invest in their own personal equipment.

Hours for the New Years holiday week will be:

  • December 29 & 30, 1-8pm
  • December 31 & New Years Day, 1-5pm
  • Friday and Saturday, January 2 & 3, 1-8pm
  • Sunday, January 4, 1-5pm

Regular Hours start Monday, January 5, 2015

  • Monday - Friday, 4-8pm
  • Saturdays, 1-8pm
  • Sundays, 1-5pm

Make it family date night on Friday nights and stay later to enjoy the bonfire with free hot chocolate.

Ice time is so hard to come by with all our local hockey teams practicing.  Consider spending some time at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center, 120 South 30th Ave West. Additional ice skating events are offered specifically during the school winter break starting December 26, 2014. Participants must bring their own skates. Children must be supervised by an accompanying adult.

As usual, regular open skate will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 8 PM.
