Depending on what lake you are fishing, you may want to make sure there is extra ice before you drive out on it. We've had a bizarre December when it comes to temperatures. It got cold fast and then it thawed, and now it is refreezing. There's been an uptick of people going through the ice with their vehicles, and now the MN DNR has said that you should double the ice thickness guidelines for ice that has thawed and refrozen.

So for clear, new ice, the guidelines are as follows:

4" on foot

5-7" snowmobile or ATV

8-12" car or small pickup

over 12" medium pickup

The weight of the fresh, heavy, wet snow we received in this last storm also reduces the amount of weight a sheet of ice can support as well, so take extra precautions.
